I am currently writing a relationship that exists in one of my novels. I've hit some snags with writing some of the scenes, because it is a tricky relationship. That's all I'm going to say about it right now. However, in the process of writing it, it has made me really think about the difficulties we all face in creating and maintaining relationships of any type. We often create daunting barriers between ourselves and others. Barriers based on our own fears which are, in turn, frequently rooted in what others expect of us...family, friends, society. More often than not, the actual physical barrier is no more than paper thin. It is these barriers created by the expectations of others that tend to keep us so distant from the people surrounding us.
In addition to fiction, I also write a little poetry. I rarely share it. It is for my own personal consumption and the occasional special other. I'm going to take a chance here and share one of my poems publicly. It is about the imagined barriers we create to keep us separate. Barriers based in fear.
I'm an avid camper, and it is not uncommon to see signage at campsites that urges the campers to leave the site better than they found it. I think it's a rule of thumb that we should also apply to the people we encounter in our lives. No matter what another's purpose might be, don't be afraid to relate. Go into it with the goal that you will simply leave them better than you found them, and that should help to take away much of the fear.
My poem is entitled So Close. I hope you enjoy it. Then, go and be fearless in your relationships!!
My back slides
against the wall.
Only six inches away.
On the other side.
So close
I can hear the humming of her heart.
Her voice
is a quiet song.
She leans into me
to speak my name.
So close
her words whisper against my skin.
She spins in her time.
Her spirit gliding in the light
behind a sheer drawn drape.
There to take my view.
Silhouette calling me
with lyrical movement.
My heart pumps a longing
to be draped in her.
My thoughts are dancing
to her laugh.
Our souls nest together
in completion.
I reach for her hand,
beyond the dark that caresses me.
And she is there, in the light
in her time.
So close
she is a million miles away.
